A Tribute to Floyd: A Legacy of Passion, Achievement, and Friendship
This week, we lost a true legend in the world of waterskiing, Floyd, whose impact on the sport, and the many lives he touched, will never be forgotten. Floyd was not only a fierce competitor, but also a mentor, a judge, and a friend who gave everything to the sport he loved.
Floyd’s impressive list of achievements speaks for itself. He set a National Trick Record with 840 points in Men 11, a feat that was also a regional record, and was the perfect companion to his impressive Slalom record of 4 @ 28 off 28 mph. And let’s not forget his overall record of 2378.7 NOPS points, a testament to his excellence and dedication.
At the last Nationals, Floyd showed the depth of his skill and sportsmanship by placing second in Trick, Slalom, and Overall. He also served as one of the SCR-appointed Judges, giving back to the sport that had given him so much. His contributions didn’t stop there; Floyd served as the Chief Judge of the Nationals in 1975 in Tomahawk, Wisconsin. He also played a key role in the Judges and Scores Committee and was instrumental in creating and updating the online clinic modules that helped countless others improve their skills.
A special moment that stands out is the time, just a month before the Nationals this year, when Floyd, with the help of a couple good friends learned how to connect his iPhone to his hearing aids so he could continue calling tricks. He was on fire—still reaching new heights, proving that his love for the sport was boundless, even as he adapted to new technologies.
But beyond his records, beyond his titles, what truly set Floyd apart was his passion and his incredible friendship. He loved the sport with all his heart, and he loved the people in it just as much. Whether he was competing, judging, or simply enjoying a day at the lake, Floyd always made sure everyone felt welcome. If you knew Floyd, you couldn’t help but love him. He was generous, kind, and always ready with a smile and a story. His presence on the water will be missed, but his legacy will live on in every skier who’s been inspired by his dedication and in every person who was fortunate enough to call him a friend.
Floyd’s contribution to the sport, and the warmth he brought to everyone around him, will never be forgotten. As we remember him, let’s celebrate the joy he found in waterskiing, the friendships he built, and the passion he shared with all of us. His spirit will remain with us, on the water and beyond.
Rest in peace, Floyd. You’ll always be a part of the lake, and you’ll forever be in our hearts. Click here for more about Floyd McCreight
